At Summercroft, we are committed to supporting the mental health and wellbeing of our pupils and staff. Our culture is supportive, caring, and respectful, promoting a positive mental health culture for all members of our community and removing any stigma associated with mental health.
We use the PSHE Association's Foundations for Wellbeing programme to form our mental health and well-being curriculum for children in Reception to Year 6.
Foundations for Wellbeing is an evidence-based programme which fulfils our statutory health education requirements by focusing on nurturing two core strengths: self-regulation (helping children manage their emotions, attention, and behaviour to reach their goals) and self-world capacity (fostering a sense of connection, resilience, and purpose). These strengths are developed throughout the programme, giving children the skills to develop their resilience in the face of life's everyday challenges.
To bring these important concepts to life, the curriculum uses relatable characters and stories that grow alongside the children each year, guiding them through age-appropriate challenges. By revisiting and building upon these strategies over time in these lessons and across the school day in general, pupils will develop practical, lifelong tools to navigate their feelings and relationships independently.
