PSHE

Intent

As part of your child’s education at Summercroft, we promote personal wellbeing and development through a comprehensive Personal, Social, Health and Economic (PSHE) and Relationship, Sex and Health Education (RSHE) programme. PSHE education is the curriculum subject that gives children the knowledge, understanding, attitudes and practical skills to live safe, healthy, productive lives and meet their full potential.

Implementation

PSHE and RSHE education is taught throughout the school in every year group and is monitored and reviewed by the staff and governing body. All PSHE teaching takes place in a safe learning environment where pupils always have opportunities to ask questions and talk about their thoughts and feelings. This is underpinned by our school ethos and values. As a school we follow the Coram Life Education SCARF programme of study, which is aligned with the PSHE Association Thematic Model and covers the following topics:

• Families and friendships

• Safe relationships

• Respecting other and ourselves

• Physical health and Mental wellbeing

• Growing and Changing

• Keeping Safe

• Belonging to a community

• Media literacy and digital resilience

• Money and work

Along with weekly PSHE lessons and circle times, the children also take part in weekly MyHappyMind sessions, aiming to promote mental health and well-being. You can find more about this here.

Outside of regular PSHE sessions, children take part in an annual Diversity Week and a Coram Education Life Space visit. The Life Space is a fun and interactive way for the children to meet Harold the giraffe and Nancy from Coram, who delivers a workshop to each year group. Diversity Week has a different theme each year, and aims to celebrate diversity in all its forms.

The children are always encouraged to share what they have learnt in PSHE with the rest of the school and their families.
